In the Court of Appeal, Lord Justice Wall when ruling on a dispute over the arrangements for the care of a child quoted from the poem ‘This Be The Verse’ by Philip Larkin about the way in which parental conflict can affect their children: ‘They may not mean to, but they do / They fill you with the faults they had / And add some extra, just for you.’ He then added: ‘These lines seem to give a clear warning to parents, who, post-separation, continue to fight the battles of the past, and show each other no respect.’
